Derby name: Belz
Muggle name: Belynda Hibbert
Role: I started out as a jammer but now I’m an All Scar blocker.
Period involved in derby: Since 2010
How did you get into roller derby?
By accident! I went to a public skate at the Papatoetoe Skate Rink and was invited by Ruby to stay for a free freshmeat training session. The rest is history!
Can you remember your first game? Describe it!
Yes! Petrified.. back in those days “home games” was where it was all at! The walls we know now didn’t exist and the game was full of HARD HITS that sent a smaller jammer like me flying into the crowd on many occasions. The hits I got back in those days don’t exist anymore. I haven’t been hit like that for many, many years… it was scary!! Clearly not scary enough to stop me playing, though!
What has been your most memorable moment or biggest achievement in derby.
Sticking at it – learning a completely new skill and sport at 33 was a bit of an ask, but I’m proud of how far I have come… and I still have quite a ways to go. Our league has also been through many ‘trials’ along the way and I’m just proud to say that I managed to survive it.
Do you have any pre-game rituals?
A must do for me is to test the track and get my wheels right… once that is done, I feel ready! Another ritual is touching… our black pack has a thing where we touch each other: a pat on the knee, on the back, just any kind of positive touch – we do this pre-game and throughout the game, it’s important and helps me gel more and know my pack has my back and vice versa!
Has anything embarrassing happened to you on the track OR Do you have a secret party trick?
OMG yes!! I remember a few years back ripping my pants but I didn’t know it. I was jamming and it was feeling a bit breezy… as the other jammer (Muss) came up behind me she was like “Ewww Belz.. I can see your butt”! I had ripped a hole and my butt was showing!
What do you do in real life?
There is life off skates?! Really?!! Lol! I’m a mum to 3 ‘almost’ adult kids – this is a priority for me – and I have just taken up doing woodworking projects at home and some DIY.
What’s your spirit animal?
What’s your idea of a perfect celebration meal after a game?
Pizza, wedges and sour cream
